I visited Blanford Forum very early one autumn morning in the hopes of seeing the otters that are known to frequent the weir just near the centre of town. Unfortunately they evaded me, though I saw evidence of their presence that morning. Nonetheless, it was a wonderful misty morning with the sun trying to shine through, there were frequent sightings of a kingfisher patrolling its territory and a heron working hard to get its next meal.
I went back again in March 2020 and this time I got lucky and saw the female otter when I was standing alone on the bank. To have my first sighting of a wild otter in the UK was absolutey thrilling, even though it was barely more than a few minutes. She poked her head up when she spotted me, swam towards me and then moved on down the river. A wonderful moment!
